William Powell Education Fund

Rachael Green
This appeal is named in honour of Bill Powell, the inspirational teacher and former CEO of IST who sadly passed away in 2016.
About
The Rufiji Leprosy Trust’s primary responsibility is to raise funds to support the work of KLCCDA (Kindwitiwi Leprosy Care and Community Development Association) in the Rufiji District of Tanzania, enabling the work of the Leprosy Care Centre in Kindwitwi. Our three objectives are:
- To find and treat leprosy in the Rufiji area of Tanzania
- To support ex-leprosy patients and their families throughout the district
- To promote self-sufficiency among those affected by leprosy and their families - including supporting education
On Tuesday 28 November, as part of #GivingTuesday, we are launching this exciting appeal to raise £5,000 allowing RLT to support amazing children for the next 3 years from Kindergarten through to Higher Education.

Many of you reading this will have visited Kindwitwi at some time in the past, maybe as much as three or four decades ago. If so, you’d be amazed at how things have changed - and very much for the better! Housing conditions are improving, there are some small shops lining the streets and, most important, the incidence of leprosy in the district has sharply declined.
If you are a former student or employee of the International School of Tanganyika (IST) you may have fond memories of driving south along the sandy track to the Rufiji River where a battered diesel boat or a dug out canoe would ferry you over to Kindwitwi to take part in community service. Some of you helped build the dispensary or the guest house, others may have built a bridge, harvested rainwater, or helped farm the land. All your efforts have been appreciated and your simple presence in the village has had a huge impact in reducing the stigma of leprosy in the surrounding area. Kindwitwi has been a massive success story, and you played your part. Thank you.
