Walking 140km to support local wildlife!
I will walk the length of The Ridgeway National Trail to support the management of local wetlands for the benefit of both wildlife and people
Raising money for
Friends of Lavell's Lake
My name is Giuliana, I am about to finish my Ecology and Wildlife Conservation degree and I am no professional walker. However, as I have been living in Reading for 3 years the challenge of walking the Ridgeway has been bugging me for some time.
Getting to know FOLL by joining their conservation work parties has made me want to contribute more towards their cause. Since its creation in 1984, the Berkshire-based charity has undertaken outstanding work to create and maintain local lakes (one of which is a Local Nature Reserve) in top shape for wildlife. This means reprofiling banks, expanding scrapes, building viewing facilities, clearing willow trees, planting reeds and shrubs and installing nesting sites for sand martins, barn owls and terns to name but a few.
Today, as the reeds sway in the wind next to the deep blue water, it’s just wonderful to sit in one of 3 comfortable hides and enjoy the ducks, waders and songbirds going about their daily business as well as spotting mammals in the fields and dragonflies and butterflies flitting about in the summer.
I want to support FOLL's remarkable creation and continuous improvement of a local heaven for wildlife.
Walking the length of the Ridgeway National Trail
The aim is to raise £10 for every km walked.
140km --> £1400
A massive thank you to every penny donated!
Onto the challenge itself...simply walking. Britain's. Oldest. Road. Easy, right? I'll tell you once I've done it!
I'll be solo walking about 140km (87 miles) of a relatively remote area of South-East England, specifically from the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), across the river Thames and all along the Chilterns AONB. As a very slow walker I predict to take around 7-10 days to complete the whole path. If you don't hear from me by the end of February, please come and fetch me!
