Raising money for
Friends of Twigs
Originated in 1997, TWIGS (Therapeutic Work in Gardening in Swindon) is a community led organisation that attempts to improve the well-being of those struggling to deal with depression, anxiety and other mental health conditions. Through encompassing components of Horticultural Therapy, those that attend TWIGS community gardens and its craft studio often report increased levels of happiness, confidence, self-esteem and social functioning. Currently six staff and around 20 volunteers deliver two weekly TWIG sessions, helping participants endure the therapeutic experience of engaging with nature. Although we currently hold a great number of people attending TWIG sessions, we would like to encourage more people with dementia to attend, due to the beneficiary effect that we believe our service could have. Research has shown that the sights, smells and sounds of gardens can often help dementia patients trigger old memories or cultivate new ones.
Crowdfunding for the TWIGS Dementia Programme
We are hoping to run a trial program for sufferers of early stage dementia and their carers. This program is set to start in September 2017 and will initially run for 5 suffers and their carers. However, to enable this pilot project to proceed we must raise funds. The money raised will cover specialized equipment, training and resources required to run the program.
