Raising money for
St James Bells Appeal - Barrow-in-Furness
Donations accepted until 25-01-2013
I am the secretary for the tower of St James, Barrow-in-Furness.
It is a great pity that the only bells that can be rung in the traditional way in the town are unsafe to ring and have not been rung together for 12 years.
I want to raise money to restore the bells at the church so that they can be heard once more for services, weddings and to celebrate other notable events.
This is my page dedicated to raising money for the Bell Restoration Appeal of St James the Great, Hindpool, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.
Can you help to raise some money to rescue the bells and preserve part of the heritage of Barrow-in-Furness?
135 Mile Swim for St James Bell Restoration Appeal
I am not particularly young or athletic, but I am trying to swim 135 miles in my local swimming pool over 9.5 months to complete on St James' day 2012 when the bells of St James will be 135 years old.
I swam 5km in a swimathon about 15 years ago but have never attempted anything on this scale before.
I started back on 7th October 2011, and I need to average about 30 lengths in my 25m pool every day for the whole 9.5 months!
Progress can be viewed at: www.andy-jo.talktalk.net/SwimFitChallenge.html
The bells had to stop ringing before the millennium when the church underwent major renovation to its roof, west window and other masonry.
When the work was complete and the future of the church secure, we found that the bells which were in poor repair before the closure, were now unsafe to ring.
Can you give anything to help restore these bells for future generations?
