About

I’m Spike Taylor, former chief mechanic for British Cycling, now a director of Beacon Cycles, Clitheroe.
A few years ago I met the Bagshaw family who had just lost their son & brother, Dan Bagshaw, to sudden arrythmic heart disease or SADS. Without warning SADS kills twelve otherwise fit and healthy young people every week! Dan himself collapsed and died on the finish line of a triathlon in Hong Kong.

The Bagshaws set up a charity, Dans Trust, to fund critical research into SADS at Imperial College, London, and screening programmes, most recently of young members of the British Cycling Team. The charity also financially supports talented youngsters around Clitheroe.

I was so moved by Dan’s story that I’ve decided to put myself through the ultimate challenge! – the IronMan triathlon in Bolton. That’s a 2.4 mile swim in open water followed by a 112 mile bike ride up some serious hills finished by a full 26.2 mile marathon! As you can see by my picture I’m not a natural athlete, and alongside training, I’ve got to shed at least 16 kilos. I’m determined to do it and to complete the triathlon.
Whatever you can donate to this great charity, I’d be really grateful,
Cheers,
Spike

Event details

Spike's Ironman Triathlon Challenge

Cyclists will embark on a 112-mile, two-loop journey from Pennington Flash and onto the breathtaking Lancashire countryside. The bike course includes the famous Sheep House Lane climb twice where spectators can get up close and personal with the athletes in true Tour de France style. The run begins at T2 at the Macron Stadium and athletes will head into Bolton town centre, where they complete three loops of a circuit before finishing in Le Mans Crescent in the shadow of the Albert Hall.
