"I was ashamed when I had my period, I stayed home from school".
These are the words of a Ugandan teenager whose period prevented her from going to school and accessing the education which would be vital to the realisation of her full potential. Taboos surrounding menstruation, and a lack of access to safe and affordable sanitary products are not just a limiting factor for this teenager, but for women and girls all over the world. Research shows that 50% of Ugandan school girls report missing school during their period, and even in the UK 49% miss at least one day of school every period.
Irise International tackles these issues by combining education and enterprise. By educating communities about menstrual health, periods can be understood by both women and men as a natural and healthy process rather than a source of shame. Through enterprise, women are empowered with the skills to manufacture safe and affordable sanitary products which local girls can access. This means they can attend school on their period, and get the vital education we all deserve.
The Pennine Way: Edale to Kirk Yetholm (268 Miles)
Over three weeks in August 2018, Sophie and Edward will be walking the Pennine Way. In doing so, we aim to raise awareness of the challenges that women and girls face, and to raise money to support the work Irise does in empowering women and girls in the UK and East Uganda.
Described by The Ramblers as "the ultimate long distance walking challenge", we will be covering a mammoth 268 Miles as we walk from Edale in the Peak District, to Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders.
Even the smallest donations will be greatly appreciated and will make a real difference in the lives of marginalised women and girls. 100% of donations given will go directly to Irise and their work. To show how your donations can help:
- £5 donated to Irise empowers a girl with pads and information to stay in school all month long
- £25 enables a young woman to access training and to support other girls
- £100 supports a community to create lasting change by transforming attitudes to menstruation
