About
AGF supports a school in Haiti, with 257 pupils, aged 11-18, drawn mainly from Cite Soleil, a vast and dangerous shanty town on the edge of Port-au-Prince. This amazing school, with the most rudimentary facilities imaginable, is staffed by dedicated local teachers and is a beacon of hope, calm and aspiration in a city still struggling to recover from the devastation caused by the 2010 earthquake, which killed an estimated 250,000 people, and the decades of misrule which preceded it.
The school opened in 2011 and is named in memory of Andrew Grene, the best friend of a Shrewsbury parent. Andrew was a UN official who was killed, along with 101 other UN staff, by the earthquake when their building collapsed.
In response to Andrew's death, his brother Gregory, and Tim Perutz set up the Andrew Grene Foundation, which not only built the school, and supports 257 pupils, but also transforms the lives of 1600 Haitian women through microfinance.
Event details
Shrewsbury School runs the Shrewsbury Half
Housemaster Richard Hudson will be running the Shrewsbury Half - the longest race of his life - because he was inspired by visiting the Andrew Grene High School in Haiti. 20 sixth formers from his house, Churchill's Hall, and many other pupils, staff and parents from Shrewsbury School will be tackling this notoriously hilly half marathon. There will be a noisy group of school supporters, at the top of steepest hill, to urge them on their way.
