Sharon's Cambodia Challenge
For family and friends this has come as a big surprise but thank you for all your encouragement! My father, Kenneth Kirkman, died at only 57 from Lung Cancer. We watched our 14 stone giant of a man be cut down to just 3 stone at the end and he died in hospital and in pain. That was before there was a Hospice here in Rochdale and since then I've seen the fantastic work they do and the difference that the care they give makes to both the person and their families.
I've always wanted to do something in memory of dad and now is the time. It's completely out of my comfort zone but it's a brilliant challenge and a brilliant cause. I'd like to raise as much money as possible and I'd really appreciate your help. The expenses associated with making the trip and doing the challenge I will be paying for myself - all the money you donate will go to Springhill.
I'm leaving UK on 9th November, flying from Heathrow to Siem Reap in Cambodia. And the challenge begins. Walking approx 5 to 6 hours a day the trek is around 80 kms or 50 miles in total. We have a rest day when we arrive and at the end before flying home other than that we will walk every day in terrain that is described as "challenging" with average temperature 26C during the day and 22C at night. Along the way we will stay overnight in home stays, hotels and camping along the route in tents at jungle monasteries.
Highlights of the journey include hidden forests, jungle villages, mountain hikes, intriguing shrines, lost temples, traditional markets, isolated mountain schools, a magnificent waterfall and ancient riverbed carvings.
There's probably no better way to explore the countryside and get to know the customs than by foot and despite the challenges, the mosquitos, the heat and anything else that's thrown at me I'm excited to be going and hoping to raise as much as possible for Springhill Hospice.
I'll be back home on 17th November! No doubt with lots of stories to tell.
