Ruth's Wig Free Week
I went wig-free for a week to fundraise for Autoimmune Alopecia Research UK.
Donations no longer accepted
I have had alopecia totalis for almost ten years, since I left school age 18. That summer, my hair began to fall out and three months later, I was completely bald. Losing my hair was extremely traumatic, as I didn't understand what was happening to my body, and was unable to control it.
Alopecia is an autoimmune disease which occurs when the immune system attacks healthy hair follicles, often causing permanent hair loss. Although not damaging to physical health, alopecia can have severe effects on quality of life and emotional health.
Over time, and with incredible support from my friends and family, I have grown more confident about my appearance, however I still feel the need to wear a wig every day.
Undertaking the challenge of Wig Free Week is a huge step for me, but I hope it will be a liberating one!
Wig Free Week
Wig Free Week will be the first time I have ever gone out in public without my wig for an extended period of time, and the first time that I have shared photographs of my bald head.
Please sponsor me to go wig-free and raise money for AAR-UK! They are a fantastic charity working to set up the UK’s first biobank for autoimmune alopecia research. The data they collect will prove invaluable to finding out what causes alopecia and may one day help find a cure to help sufferers across the world.
The Youtube links above contain a video about AAR-UK and one about my story. You can also visit my blog to find out more:
