I will hopefully finish the Brighton Marathon to raise money for Westwood Academy. No pressure, but if you fancy sponsoring me, that'd be great!

About

46 years of age, old and wise enough to know better. I am engaging in my first full marathon in Brighton....  The thought of it feels me with both excitement and stone-cold dread, but the reasons for doing it have made the journey - however it turns out - to be truly worthwhile.

I've been training for this event since 4th January 2016 (when I became the Head), to try and destroy the body that Mars Bars built and set a better example to my own children and to the pupils of Westwood, showing that if you put your mind to it you really can go from zero exercise to a marathon.  There have been real ups and downs on the way and as recently as 4 weeks ago, I was not even participating thanks to a torn calf muscle.  An opportunistic mix of belligerence, stupidity and luck have seen me get over the injury and have a reasonable chance of finishing, albeit at a slower pace...

I'm raising money for Westwood Academy because, as the Head of School, I really can't think of a better place to invest in for the future.  Every penny raised will go to our brilliant PTFA, who in this case will help to buy resources to improve the playground environment and resources.

Event details

Brighton Marathon 2017.

It's a marathon.  26.2 miles of road pounding.  In hindsight, I should have picked one not quite as hilly.  There's an uphill section of about 3 miles...  But I got married in Brighton and so it seemed like a great choice for my first marathon.  I'm hoping that there is a nice sea breeze that day rather than a swirling tempest coming in over the channel!  Details of the event can be found here:

Tracking...
There is also an app that I can be tracked with apparently... I'll share the details and then really hope I get round else you'll all know in real time!  In the App Store, search "Brighton Marathon 2017", download the app, then under "tracking", search John Archer.  You can also search Sarah Archer, my wife is running too for Southend Hospital, if you like.  She is much quicker than me, but may take pity and slow down to keep me company on the day!

It's with genuine fear but massive excitement I'm doing this.  This isn't a high pressure "SPONSOR ME NOW" type thing, but if you fancy sponsoring me I'd be genuinely grateful and I'm sure the pupils at Westwood would be too.  Thank you.
