Ros' Tour De France (Down Under) Challenge
St Peter's Lifeline is a small grass roots, Christian charity which supports a desperately poor, community in a harsh, remote, semi-arid area of NE Kenya. It is run by a friend from University and her father who has Kenyan roots. From its modest beginnings 9 years ago, they now cover a wide aspect of much needed support. Their ultimate goal is complete sustainability of all projects.
One of their latest projects is to tackle those with Obstetric Fistula.
This is a condition caused by prolonged, obstructed labour, sometimes up to three day and without medical intervention, effecting a breach between the woman’s vagina and bladder and/or rectum.
This causes continuous and uncontrollable leakage of urine and/or faeces through the birth canal. The consequences are awful: frequent wetting and soiling, with a foul, associated smell. These women are rejected by the husband, and are too ashamed to go out into the community. They are completely isolated.
But the condition is remediable with surgery by specialist surgeons. The outcome would give these women their lives back completely. Surgery costs £300 so my aim is to raise £900 (one woman for every labour I had).
L'Etape Australia is the largest Tour De France outside, well, France! It is a 170km route in the Snowy Mountains of NSW, not far from Canberra. It finishes with a 30m ascent of Mount Kosciuszko (Australia's highest mountain).
But that's the easy bit. The hard bit is training over the next few weeks as it's Spring. And Spring time in Canberra involves being attacked by magpies who are protecting their nests.
So, any support you can give will help motivate me on those days when I don't feel like training. This is a truly worthy cause and literally EVERY PENNY you donate will go to those women who really need their lives back.
