Robert's London Marathon
Far from being an avid runner, I was asked by my boss, who also happens to be chief-exec of Community Southwark, to run the London Marathon to fundraise for Southwark Giving. I, somewhat hastily, agreed and here I am, nearly five months down the line, gearing up to face 26.2 miles.
I have gone from undertaking little to no exercise to completing weekend "long runs" that are eye-watering in length. And painful - don't get me started on intimate rashes. Adding to an already difficult challenge I have cheerfully maintained my 15-a-day smoking habit. Far from ideal and far from recommended but, if you spin it round, you could say that I am overcoming even greater adversity! (I jest...)
I am running the marathon for a worthy cause indeed. SG is a place-based giving scheme that will innovatively address hidden, unmet and emerging community needs in Southwark. This will bring people together from different sectors and provide opportunities for people to give their time, skills and/or money. The borough contains eight wards which are in the bottom 10% most deprived in the country. That needs to change! And fast!
GiftAid will be covered by Community Southwark.
We all know by now what the London Marathon is all about!
