Richard is running for Ruggles!
In 2017 I met the family of Alice Ruggles in the most tragic of circumstances. I was the QC assigned to prosecute the man who had murdered their daughter Alice after subjecting her to a campaign of stalking and harassment.
The case had a profound impact on me for three reasons:
Firstly, I was simply in awe of the strength, courage and dignity of the entire Ruggles Family and all of Alice's many friends throughout the ordeal of the trial.
Secondly, I was shocked by what the case revealed to be the dangers that many people, and particularly young women, are exposed to by stalking behaviour. I was convinced of the need to do more to educate not just potential victims but also front line professionals as to the warning signs to prevent cases escalating as Alice's had done.
And finally, I was inspired by Alice's mum Sue who determined to stand up and do something - something easy like running a half marathon and raise money for the charity that had been founded in Alice's name.
So that is why this avowed loather of all forms of exercise has been training hard for a year, has lost over 2st in weight to date and is going to complete the GNR for the Alice Ruggles Trust!
Great North Run 2018
The Great North Run is the world's greatest half-marathon with over 50,000 runners. It passes through Gateshead, where Alice was murdered in 2016, and Alice's mum Sue ran the GNR in the following year 2017, raising over £10,000 for Women's Aid. In 2018 several runners, including Alice's dad Clive, will be taking part in the GNR to raise funds for the Trust.
