A few years ago, the daughter of two friends was diagnosed with NA (neuroacanthocytosis), a rare and incurable neurodegenerative disease that causes most sufferers to lose the ability to chew, speak and walk.
Very sadly, the disease strikes many in their 20s, just when they should be starting their independent lives. After they learned that NA is one of Britain's rarest rare diseases, with just a handful of cases nationally, my friends started their own advocacy group and research effort.

The Advocacy for NA Patients has done amazing work, funding research that has already identified the protein missing in patients who have one of the NA group of diseases. This research is seeking long term support, but for now fundraisers like ours make all the difference to raising awareness and funds.

Event details

Rare Plants for Rare Disease Research

Please support the Stopwatch Gardener fundraiser for NA Research. Organised by garden blogger Sheila Averbuch, the event is a special sale of garden plants, both common and more unusual, along with delicious home baking in Pencaitland on May 6th between 10am and 1pm.

The fundraiser will donate all proceeds to the Advocacy for
Neuroacanthocytosis Patients. In the run-up to the day Sheila is looking for the support of nurseries who would be willing to donate plants, ideally rare or unusual, to sell at the event. Please email Sheila at

If you can't donate plants, please consider making a financial donation of any size. to support NA Research. Thank you for your support! For more information and photos of plants to be sold on the day, visit our Facebook page on
