Raising money for
World Land Trust
Selflessness to the degree my Mum displayed is rare. As a forensic psychologist, she saw the darkest side of human nature. Yet that never impacted on her unflinching desire to care for others less fortunate than herself.
As someone who cared passionately for the environment, she supported many charities, especially those aimed at ensuring our planet and all it supports are protected and sustained.
Having first been to Africa in her twenties, it was her life-long wish to take me there one day so I could begin to understand the environmental impact our actions have on others. Yet in the early hours of 16th December 2016, I watched her pass away, at peace, having fought both lung and brain cancer for many months, without blame or self-pity. Despite having 11 tumours, she still managed to smile.
I know she would have wanted us to cherish her memory and all that she believed in. I'll never go to Africa with her but I'm determined to bring something good of the world's loss, through working on charity projects in her memory. Her favourite charity, the World Land Trust currently runs a project in Kenya. Perhaps I can make as much difference in my lifetime as she did in hers.
The World Land Trust
In 1989, the World Land Trust (WLT) pioneered the Buy an Acre concept of buying land for conservation and continues to fund ground-breaking habitat protection to this day.
With its overseas project partners, it’s been instrumental in the purchase and protection of nearly 500,000 acres of tropical forest and other threatened habitats, and ensuring that over four million acres of land worldwide is managed under active protection.
I've been in touch with the charity and all donations will go towards the Plant a Tree programme that they currently run on Mount Kenya, a part of the world important to both myself and my Mum.
