About

I am retiring from the NHS at the end of April 2018 after almost 40 years working in the NHS, more than 30 years in mental health and 17 years in Huddersfield.
I plan to spend some of my first year doing long-distant walks in the UK and what better place to start than on my doorstep in the beautiful Peak District National Park.

I want to put together my love of the outdoors and wish to be out as much as possible in retirement, with taking the opportunity to fund raise for a local charity that has links in with mental health services.

All proceeds with go to DASH which supports those who seek asylum, often with significant history of trauma and  who struggle to find housing. I have worked with a number of people who have benefited from the support offered by DASH, both practical support and companionship and welcome.

Additionally, this links to memory of my Dad who died 5 years ago and hugely admired the work and the band music of the Salvation Army. For the last 18 months DASH has been hosted by the Salvation Army in Huddersfield.

DASH can be contacted at http://www.huddsdash.org.uk/

Event details

Peak District Boundary Walk for DASH

I plan to walk the 190 mile Peak District Boundary route in 20 days of 10 miles each, aiming to do 2 days each week. I aim to start at the beginning of May and finish by the beginning of July.
The boundary walk has recently been re-devised and a guide published by the Friends of the Peak District including a passport to be stamped at the end of each section in one of the conveniently located pubs!
Walking from home each day allows me to both keep an eye on the weather and choose the best days for walking but also to invite friends to come and do a section of the walk if they so wish. Molly, my dog, will be happy for company of either the 2 legged or 4 legged variety.
Walking gives great opportunities for both contemplation and meeting and talking to others along the way and I am always grateful for having been born into a country and to have lived in Yorkshire where I have the opportunity to access the beauty of the outdoors and the friendliness of other walkers. I am aware that those who arrive in this country seeking a new home have not had the same opportunity to stay in a place that they love and with those family or friends who they have know for all their lives.
