Off road across India
As many of you will know I rarely run (except from my front door to the car in the rain), hence you haven't ever been pestered to sponsor me for marathons, half-marathons or even fun-runs (fun?).
I have reached the age of 62 without twisting your arm for charity support, but this event is the one I need to beg you to help...
One of my passions is motorcycling - it has been ever since I rode pillion on my grandad's BSA 650 in 1959. And this expedition, created by Rotary District 3181 in India is a great challenge .
I am using the trip to raise much needed funds for the Usha Kiran Eye Hospital, Mysore.
Every donation you make will be tripled by Rotary Foundation. So the £120 cost of delicate sight surgery on a baby from a poor family can be achieved with donations of only £40.
Restoring sight to a poor baby.
The fundraising is supported by Global Sight Solutions: a Rotary charity, which has established almost 50 eye hospitals and paid for 850,000 cataract operations since 1998.
It is a cause that resonates with me - I have a congenital cataract.
Wish me luck.
But more importantly, donate to make someone's life more bearable....
Rotary centennial expedition 2017
On the morning of 14 January, at the magnificent Mysore Palace, I will be presented with a motorbike to use for 2 weeks of riding across India. The specification is "Min. 350cc, 2-wheels". That's it! I am praying for a seat, brakes and handlebars, but we shall see...
We then set off on a 2000km ride across central western India - mostly off road. Motorcycling Rotary members from around the world. Celebrating the centenary of Rotary Foundation and raising money for local good causes.
The route takes in coffee plantations, temples, waterfalls, coastal roads and even a tiger sanctuary. More prayers - for a bike that is faster than a tiger, and doesn't break down.
We will be dining each evening as hosts of Rotary Clubs on the route, making friends and creating fellowship.
I have paid for the flights, the hire of the bike, all fuel, kit, accommodation and food. And my fellow partners at Tuffin Ferraby Taylor have generously allowed me time away from my day job to raise funds for the charity. So every £ that you donate will go straight to the charity - and the money will be tripled.
