Patrick runs Marathon des Sables 2017
I am participating in the 250 km 'Marathon des Sables 2017' in Morocco this April and in doing so will fundraise for three very worthy charities.
Donations no longer accepted
Since moving to Morocco in October 2014, I have had more than half an eye on the Sahara... after one visit in April 2016, I am now signed up as a Moroccan resident for the famous desert race, MdS.
I have chosen to support three charities: SOS Children's villages, CLIC Sargent and The Parkinson's Trust. Any donation is very much appreciated! Some more info on each:
The Cure Parkinson's Trust is dedicated to finding a cure to Parkinson's and has funded some ground breaking research in recent years. It also supports those living with Parkinson's to better manage their symptoms and preserve their quality of life.
CLIC Sargent is the UK’s leading cancer charity for children, young people and their families. From diagnosis, CLIC Sargent’s specialist care teams will step in, ready to help, support and guide. They will provide a specialist package of support tailored to each young cancer patient and family.
SOS Children's Villages UK supports abandoned and orphaned children all around the world. Their objective is to ensure that all children are provided with a caring family and with access to healthcare and education.
Marathon des Sables 2017
Ranked by the Discovery Channel as the most gruelling foot race on earth, this ultra-marathon is run in 6 days over a course of 250km through the Sahara desert, across salt pans, over sand dunes and up desert mountains, all in temperatures reaching 50 degrees Celsius!
The rules require you to be self-sufficient, to carry with you everything you need to survive except water. You are given a place in a tent to sleep at night, but any other equipment and food must be carried on your back.
The training programme has been exhausting, peaking with 50 mile weekends in sand and trails with a 9kg pack. Lie ins are a distant memory and it has taught me a lot - sometimes painful lessons! I am lucky to have 6 other MdS entrants here in Casablanca with more than 20 prior races between them, I'm pretty sure I couldn't manage without them.
My entry and equipment is all fully paid for so your donations will go directly to the charities (with the lowest possible fees thanks to mydonate).
