Get Behind Team GB
We are fundraising for the British Athletes selected to run the World Orienteering Championships in Latvia starting on August 4th.
Raising money for
The Orienteering Foundation
Donations accepted until 22-08-2018
We are fundraising for the GB team via The Orienteering Foundation (for more information see www.orienteeringfoundation.org.uk.) Donations made via this page will help reduce the level of athlete contributions to WOC 2018.
The success of last year's campaign really helped many of the athletes, easing financial pressure and being boosted by the support shown by the orienteering community.
2018 is the last full WOC with both forest and sprint races, and is also a year of the biennial European Champs (EOC). 13 of the 14 of athletes attending WOC also went to EOC in Switzerland, gaining a bronze medal and 3 podium places. Athlete costs were £700 each. The Orienteering Foundation gave grants to some athletes, and extra funds came from the athlete-led Scottish Spring weekend.
So, what can you do to help? We invite you to contribute towards the cost of sending a GB team to WOC 2018. Donations both small and large will make a difference.
Any surplus received above the target will be treated as donations to the Orienteering Foundation general fund. The trustees would be mindful of the cause that which generated the funds when considering future grant applications for GB team projects.
World Orienteering Championships 2018
For WOC 2018, British Orienteering pays entry fees and accreditation. Athletes fund their travel to Latvia, accommodation and travel to the competitions. This is estimated to be £600 each.
These expenses are just part of the story as the athletes incur many costs through the rest of the year - in general for training and other competitions, and in balancing their work against their need for training and recovery. So, for example they work part-time or negotiate additional unpaid leave with employers.
Your contribution will help the team's preparation and performance and there is a plus side for orienteering. Through the achievements of the GB team, there is a wealth of top class experience to draw on and, increasingly good results to help inspire a new generation of young orienteers. Members of the squad are involved in Q and A sessions (Scottish 6 day and JK day 1), helping at prize giving (JK) and doing interviews for television (BBC Adventure Show) and websites (ontheredline.org.uk). All these things promote the best of orienteering.
