Changing Lives with Money Matters Leicester
I'm Nina, and I'm one of 11 people who volunteer for Money Matters Leicester. Why? Because we are passionate about living out the Christian life by helping those in debt.
We've seen the stress, the shame, the guilt, the despair. We've heard about the struggle to put food on the table, the health breakdowns, the suicide attempts.
We know that we can use our skills and training to help these people. We are a team of like minded people who have come together as volunteers to be Money Matters Leicester.
They are amazing people who've given their precious spare time to train as debt advisers and turn up week after week to help those in need.
They also bring a huge range of professional skills: we have a benefits specialist, two who used to work for the CAB, one who worked with vulnerable teenagers and adults, a personnel specialist, a mortgages specialist, an IT specialist, a pastoral specialist, someone who's training for accountancy, a legal specialist, and several with business training.
We've been running for two years already. In the last 12 months we gave life-changing help to 60 clients. We're ready to help clients with any debt challenges.
Bring it on.
Free Debt Advice for Anyone Who Needs It
We provide high quality free debt advice, and, because we are all volunteers, it's only costing £6,300 this year to run our service. That's peanuts for a professional advice service. We just need £2,000 to add to our startup grant funding to see us through the next 12 months.
A is a wheelchair user in her sixties. She had four sets of bailiffs chasing her. She and her friend who cares for her full time were living on her disability benefit and virtually nothing else. We immediately applied for Carer’s Allowance, and started negotiating with the bailiffs. She and her carer are absolutely delighted.
B works full time, but was having 50% of her wages taken by Attachments to Earnings due to unpaid debts. She was very depressed and could not see a way to retain enough of her wages to live on. We went through her finances and arranged for a Debt Relief Order, which removed all the Attachments to Earnings. We then helped her with budgeting.
C was a man in his sixties with a serious heart condition, who is a full time carer for his severely disabled wife. He was terrified of a court case for a £10k debt. We proved that the debt was out of time, and got the case dropped.
