I was diagnosed with acute angle-closure glaucoma in 2005, retinoschisis in 2012, and a detached retina in 2014. All three conditions have caused irreparable damage to my eyes, which is why I'm fundraising for research into these areas.
Glaucoma is usually caused by a build up of pressure in the eye, which causes damage to the optic nerve. It can't be cured. The damage that is done is irreversible. Drops/tablets, laser treatment and surgery are used to try and reduce the pressure in the affected eye(s), to try and prevent any further damage. With acute angle-closure glaucoma the pupil/iris can also be damaged, and this also can't be repaired.
Retinoschisis is an eye condition where the retina splits into multiple layers. It can't be treated at all.
Detached retinas can be re-attached with a high degree of success, but there is often permanent damage done to the retina and thus permanent vision problems, which can't be treated.
Eye to Eye 2016
Eye to Eye 2016 is the second annual walk from Moorfields Eye Hospital to the London Eye. There are two routes, a 14 mile (22.5 km) one and a 4 mile (6.5 km) one. I'm doing the 14 mile route. The money I raise will go towards glaucoma and retinal research.
