Mary rides the Alps 2018
Last year I made a spur of the moment decision to join an inspiring group of crazy-sounding strangers cycling to Athens from London with a battered van for back-up and only the roughest elements of a plan. I cycled over 600km from Paris to Lyon and waved my goodbyes just as the Alps started to heave into view. On the way I learned a lot about friendship, resilience and the cause we are supporting: a grassroots community-led refugee centre in Athens.
This year I'm back. In many ways the cause is more urgent; the refugee crisis is not headline news but thousands of people are still stuck in Greece in limbo. I'll be using this as an opportunity
to learn more about their circumstances and how we can help.
By taking on the Alpine leg (880km, over 15,000km of climbing) I've also set myself the toughest physical challenge I've ever done. Yes, I love riding my bike, but I am genuinely a bit scared of the mountains. I know it will be a big emotional journey as well as an adventure.
Your support means a lot to me, and to Khora. Thank you.
London to Athens 2018
A group of not-so-serious cyclists have set themselves the serious challenge of cycling between London and Athens. The ride is a relay-style challenge, with each participant taking on a week or two of the overall trip.
We are fundraising for Khora; a grassroots, proactive association running a community centre in Athens. Their centre provides basic and human needs for people without freedom of movement. This includes free nutritious food, clothing, education, access to information and a safe space to build relationships and relax.
Equally important to what they offer, is how they offer it. Khora is run by volunteers from all over the world. Its team includes members of the local Greek community, the refugee community and other international volunteers too. It prioritises dignity and respect in every service it provides.
The £60,000 we are aiming to raise will pay for the rent for their community centre for an entire year. The running costs of a project are typically the hardest to find funding for, so it of particular importance to be able to provide this for Khora, to secure a stable future for the project. All fund-raised money goes to Khora, and none on the ride.
