Mary's ride for refugees 2017
For the last couple of years I've wanted to do something to support refugees arriving in Greece. It wasn't obvious to me what I could do personally, and who best to support. Then I found out about the ride to Athens, organised by Help Refugees, a charity who fund grassroots, refugee-focused organisations across Europe.
Many of the cyclists have direct links with Khora, through having volunteered there. We'll be keeping up with their work with Skype calls as we travel so we'll have a real sense of the difference we and our supporters are making.
I'm looking forward to the cycling - although 6 days non-stop averaging 100km a day won't be easy - but I'm most excited to have the opportunity to contribute in small way to the ongoing human crisis on our doorstep.
I'm also planning a couple of fundraising events, including a refugee history themed cycle tour in London and a sponsored ride by my 4 year-old. If you're donating for either of those here - THANK YOU - and please mention it in the comments. If you'd like to know more about either of the above please contact me directly.
Thighs of Steel 2017
We are fundraising for Help Refugees, who fund small grassroots refugee organisations. The specific group we are fundraising for is Khora, a co-operative made up of volunteers from all over the world, including the local Greek community, the refugee community and other international volunteers. Their community centre in Athens provides not only basic needs such as free nutritious food, warm clothing and access to dental care, but also social needs such as education, child care, access to information and a safe space to build relationships and relax.
