The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is a charity based in the UK and Republic of Ireland that saves lives through the provision of 24-hour lifeboat search and rescue services, seasonal lifeguards, water safety education, and flood rescue response. This charity relies in part on donations to maintain its services and most of its volunteers are unpaid. In 2015, 22 people were rescued every day, 442 lives were saved, over 5,800 lifesavers were trained and equipped, and 8,228 lifeboats were launched. In 2016, we experienced first-hand what an amazing, selfless and courageous job some of these volunteers and lifeguards do. In fact, if it weren’t for the lifeguards of the RNLI at Croyde Bay in North Devon, the three of us would not be here, together, today.

Event details

250 miles from London to Croyde Bay in four days

Some of you may know in more detail how much these lifeguards and the work they do mean to the three of us.  The volunteers who work for the RNLI put their lives on the line on a regular basis; and without this charity, a lot of out beautiful beaches would not be the safe places they are now that families and visitors can enjoy. The three of us felt it important to show our gratitude to the RNLI and, while we know that no amount of financial contribution can match the life they saved that day, it's certainly the least we can do.
To raise money for the charity, the three of us will be cycling from Central London across to Croyde Bay in four days.  That's 250 miles on some pretty standard road bikes. We look forward to cycling around the final bend on the coast and seeing the beautiful bay on the horizon, but until that blissful moment, we'll be enduring some pretty vast distances, long uphill slogs, west country weather, flat tires, sore quads and the occasional meltdown. This charity has come to mean so much to us; and we'd love it if you could join us in supporting the volunteers who do a job that saves life every day.  We know! We've seen it!
