My Thighs of Steel 2017: Trieste to Dubrovnik
In order to raise awareness and much-needed funds for refugees in Greece, I have taken up the challenge of cycling 700km in 6 days this June.
Raising money for
I'm a 30-year-old Estonian living in Birmingham, UK.
Just 13 weeks before setting off, I have managed to get a place in the Thighs of Steel 2017 cycling event from Trieste, Italy to Dubrovnik, Croatia, raising money for the Help Refugees charity (read more below).
Courageous? Adventurous? Slightly mad and stupid? Probably all of the above, but I am doing this because:
- This cause is really close to my heart
- I enjoy cycling a lot (saying this before the challenge!)
- I have been to Italy before but not the other countries on the way
- What else could be more fun for a week in June, writing up my PhD thesis??
Thighs of Steel 2017
We are fundraising for Help Refugees, who fund small grassroots refugee organisations. The specific group we are fundraising for is Khora, a co-operative made up of volunteers from all over the world, including the local Greek community, the refugee community and other international volunteers. Their community centre in Athens provides not only basic needs such as free nutritious food, warm clothing and access to dental care, but also social needs such as education, child care, access to information and a safe space to build relationships and relax.
