Maia cycling to support refugees!
Like most people, I've been appalled by the refugee crisis. I've decided it's time to get more active about making a difference by using some the skills and resources I already have: legs and a bike!
Thighs of Steel is a sponsored bike ride from London to Athens to raise money for Khora community centre in Athens. Since March 2016, the Macedonian border has been shut to refugees leaving them stranded in Greece for an indefinite period whilst their asylum claims are assessed. Every day Khora makes a huge difference to the lives of these people stuck without any state benefit system to support them. You can find out more about Khora here: http://www.khora-athens.org/welcome-to-the-khora-community-centre/.
Last year Thighs of Steel raised enough money to pay for the rent and electricity of the Khora community centre building for an entire year! We hope to do the same again this year. That's the real, tangible impact of any donations you can afford - all sponsorship will go directly to Khora.
I'm joining the ride from Dubrovnik to Corfu. There are mountains. It will be hot. A daily shower won't be guaranteed. We'll also be cycling 800km over 7 days.
Please sponsor me!
Thighs of Steel 2017
We are fundraising for Help Refugees, who fund small grassroots refugee organisations. The specific group we are fundraising for is Khora, a co-operative made up of volunteers from all over the world, including the local Greek community, the refugee community and other international volunteers. Their community centre in Athens provides not only basic needs such as free nutritious food, warm clothing and access to dental care, but also social needs such as education, child care, access to information and a safe space to build relationships and relax.
