The Big Climb
In both my pregnancies I developed a condition called intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP). It is the most common liver condition specific to pregnancy and affects around 5,500 women a year in the UK. The main symptom is itching and the condition has to be diagnosed through blood tests the most important test being a bile acid test. Research shows that those with severe ICP have an increased risk of stillbirth if the pregnancy goes to full term. There are also links with spontaneous premature labour (as I had with Leigh). It's hard to explain how bad the itching is, for me, it was intense with no let up day or night, (but for some women it can be very mild) my skin was raw, bruised and infected due to my scratching and I couldn't stop. I spent 6 weeks in horrendous discomfort, I became irrational, exhausted and terrified I'd lose my baby.
This happened with both pregnancies and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. Although research is taking place into ICP much more is needed to be able to protect babies from the risk of. I was fortunate and had two beautiful and healthy babies - can I ask you to donate and help ensure that as many people as possible have the same outcome as mine?
