Race on horseback across the Sahara Desert
Sahara Desert, Morocco
As some of you may know I crossed the Namibia desert last year on horseback, 400km across extraordinary landscape, it was an amazing &challenging experience. So when someone told me about a race across the Sahara Desert I naively thought, why of course! So here I am, joining 110 riders on a 200km race across the Sahara Desert in teams of 5. With very limited map reading skills (as my kids well know), I am meeting my brave stallion (no pun intended)& the all-women-dream-team on 26 Feb, to embark on an experience of a life time. The race will start in the dunes of Merzouga for a 6-day journey. Difficult terrain, riding through the night & endless co-ordinates, & a team made up of desert novices! I may be far out of my comfort zone but I feel extremely lucky, like most of us reading this page, that I will be coming back after an amazing adventure to my family&home. This is not the case for some of the women &children in southern Morocco. Our team name is AMANE, which means hope &is the name of the educational centre set up by the Moroccan Children’s Trust for which I am trying to raise funds through your support. The aim is to make a difference to those who have, possibly, lost hope.
About the Moroccan Children’s Trust
As part of Patron’s charitable initiatives, I am raising funds to support a small UK charity called The Moroccan Children’s Trust. MCT is dedicated to changing the lives of vulnerable children &women in the southern part of Morocco.
I am looking to raise funds to help build an outreach service, through which the staff will undertake detached social work every evening & night time, focussing on children undertaking risky behaviours in the outskirts of town, where drug-taking & sexual abuse are known to be common. The funds will go towards employing & training social workers, teachers, psychologists & providing activities such as sport, art &drama as an alternative to harmful activities on the streets.
With your help, each child who MCT engages through the street outreach service will have a real chance to turn their life around & provide a better future for themselves & their families.
I hope you will support my cause & follow me on my incredible adventure braving the Sahara on horseback. Please share my page with anyone that might be interested in supporting or at least keeping up with my progress in this unforgettable Saharan experience.
