The Unofficial Women and Children Centre Calais has changed its name to MEENA. MEENA means LOVE (Pashto), the place we are coming from.
Following more than a year at the frontline of the Calais emergency crisis, MEENA has set up in the UK to continue working with refugees and asylum seekers.
‘The story doesn’t end when you make it to the UK’
MEENA works to identify issues for women and children accessing the asylum system. We offer support and help find solutions for the best possible outcomes. We achieve this by responding immediately to practical needs, signposting local networks including advocacy and professional legal advice, as well as much needed emotional and psychological help. We continue to work with Help Refugees and Safepassage along with other established organisations offering support to asylum seekers and refugees. We continue to monitor the situation for women and children in France and identify and respond to issues.

Event details

Fundraising MEENA formerly UWCC

MEENA is now based in the midlands where we are opening a centre to continue our work with Women and Children asylum seekers and refugees. The centre will offer a safe space and enable this core group to access support and information. We will run workshops to aid integration, independent living skills, understanding ‘rights’, along with activities to enhance quality of life. We are working in partnership with Birmingham University to provide front line Social and Support workers a ‘master class’ on supporting the Women and Children they work with.

Our outreach work supports young people to ensure they are accessing the services available to them. We have supplied emergency accommodation for women with children, basic mobile phones to the most vulnerable, emergency clothing and hygiene, day-to-day activities to enrich lives, educational support and basic resources. We pay fuel/travel for volunteers.

In London we have launched Welcome Cinema, an integration project inviting refugees and UK Citizens to come together to share food and watch films.
