Cycling to Athens
On 24th June I will be setting off from Corfu and cycling through arid mountains in the boiling heat, aiming for Athens. It should take us a week of thigh burning, eye-popping hard graft up the hills (and wheel-rims on fire, nose to the tarmac, whoop-inducing descents) to raise money for a community centre in Athens called Khora.
On the way, we will be keeping our costs down by wild-camping and cooking our own food. Which is a good thing as all the costs are born by the cyclists themselves! So every penny you give goes straight to Khora, to feed people.
I went to Khora before it opened and had a look round and was really struck by what an amazing project it is. Khora provides so much for refugees in Athens, and all via donations. They have a kitchen and cafe, and their space is used for clinics, legal advice, therapy, education and much more. The place has a really healing feel to it and I have been wanting to get back there ever since that visit.
If they have room for me I might be volunteering with them for a few days when I get there.......

We are fundraising for Help Refugees, who fund small grassroots refugee organisations. The specific group we are fundraising for is Khora, a co-operative made up of volunteers from all over the world, including the local Greek community, the refugee community and other international volunteers. Their community centre in Athens provides not only basic needs such as free nutritious food, warm clothing and access to dental care, but also social needs such as education, child care, access to information and a safe space to build relationships and relax.
