John was an active 55 year old, who would happily walk for miles. Always proud of his Darlington roots, John read Maths at Christ's College, Cambridge and Statistics at Manchester. He joined the Civil Service rising to be a director, working in HM Treasury, the Cabinet Office and (what is now) the Dept for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy.
Outside work, John took on various roles and had an eclectic range of interests over the years from being a school governor to a member of the Council of the John Buchan Society running its social media accounts. He loved his sport, especially: cricket (Durham CCC of course), horse racing (he was a member of the Elite Racing Club), Darlington FC (though he often groaned over their results) and, more surprisingly, Arsenal FC. He read voraciously; collected many books (and gadgets); ran tournaments & won awards for boardgame-playing; published photos on Blipfoto; and enjoyed music, food and drink - ideally with friends and family.
Much to his surprise, John recently became increasingly breathless and was finally diagnosed on 6th September with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, an incurable condition. He knew then he would most likely end his days confined to a wheelchair and dependent upon an oxygen tank, probably within three to five years. However, he died unexpectedly early, just before our wedding anniversary.
I am raising money for Action for Pulmonary Fibrosis so that more research may be carried out to help prevent this terrible condition, which has such a life-changing impact on those who develop it and their families, and to help others like John who are already suffering from it. Please give generously.
Thank you very much.
