Bats in the Belfry
Most of us don't think about the problems of old age: it's too far away.
That used to be me, but now that I'm fast approaching state pension age, I'm looking into things a little. It seems to me that one of the main issues, and one that we can all do something about is loneliness of older people.
We can all visit a lonely person, particularly those who are not well enough or fit enough to get about.
I've decided to draw attention to the problem and at the same time raise some money for Age UK Leicester Shire & Rutland.
It's is an excellent local charity dedicated to the wellbeing of local people of advancing years, particularly those who are most vulnerable and in need.
Bats in the Belfry
Commencing 12 June, I shall be spending a whole week in the belfry of St Remigius Church in Long Clawson.
Not many mod cons up there, just a very noisy clock and even noisier bells. Just spiders to keep me company.
I chose this Church because it has a unique means of access - a 30 foot vertical ladder which is pulled down by a rope from the tower.
Therefore it will be a test of endurance for me and a challenge of scaling the ladder for anyone willing to visit me during my self-imposed week of isolation.
Isolation is the theme - I shall know what it is like to live cut off from the outside world. Hopefully most older people who have little human contact live in more salubrious surroundings that the belfry!
Thank you for reading this. If you do decide to support me, then that is brilliant because your donation will be matched by my very generous former employer.
