There was a time, while I was still at school and regular exercise was an enforced activity, when I ran a 10k race. My sporting abilities are now a very different story, and although I've done a couple of long cycles, this is the first 'serious' challenge I've taken on in a while.

It feels daunting, but at the same time I've always been motivated by opportunities to push myself, physically and mentally, to discover what I'm capable of. For me this is a way of questioning the limitations that I place on myself, and those which are placed on me by others.

This tendency to challenge expectations is something I have recognised in many of the brilliant people I've come across in the last two years while working for a theatre company (Extant) led by visually impaired artists. Through being with this company I've connected with various groups and individuals from other sight loss organisations, including East London Vision, who empower people to smash through barriers and social limitations each and every day. I am delighted to be running for them this March.

Event details

The Big Half Marathon

The Big Half is a new one day festival centred around the half marathon distance, which aims to be truly global and uniquely local in a celebration of the wonderful cultural diversity of the great city of London. It starts at Tower Bridge, finishing in Greenwich, and passing through the boroughs of Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Lewisham and Greenwich.

About the charity
East London Vision (ELVis) is an organisation established so that everyone living in East London experiencing, or at risk of, any form of sight loss, receives a high quality service relevant to their need and at a time appropriate for themselves.

They cover seven boroughs north of the river Thames, running various activities that promote social inclusion and empower wellbeing and independence amongst their members.
