In March 2018, James woke up with stroke-like symptoms and was rushed to hospital. After going through three weeks of misdiagnoses, hospital trips, ambulance calls and agony, James was finally admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. At the time of his admission, he couldn't recognise loved ones, walk unaided or communicate coherently with doctors. He was diagnosed with meningoencephalitis - an inflammation of the brain combined with meningitis, which carries a fatality rate of 1 in 5, and often leaves its victims with lifelong complications.
After two weeks of intensive treatment, one hospital birthday party and several months of recovery, James has been fortunate to only be left with very minor effects of his illness. We are hoping to raise awareness and support for The Encephalitis Society throughout 2019 in the hope that their work will allow more victims to be as fortunate as James.
James & Kat are taking on the #Walk1000miles challenge in 2019. Over the course of 2019, they will both cover 1000 miles - at least 365 miles of which will be completed by running at least a mile a day, every single day, for the whole year, come rain or shine! A sponsorship of 1p per mile (£10) would make a huge difference to the Society … and to our motivation!
