Hiking Length Of Scotland In Aid Of Mental Health
This challenge is dedicated to the memory of four men I have known who sadly ended their lives, including Frightened Rabbit's Scott Hutchison
Donations accepted until 20-09-2018
The recent loss of Scott Hutchison has been a massive blow to the people I am surrounded by who knew and loved him and to the Scottish music community. It's yet another painful reminder that poor mental health can end lives and bring great sadness to loved ones. Please help if you can by donating. Proceeds go to SAMH (Scottish Association for Mental Health) and to CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) which is a charity in aid of male suicide prevention.
I have chosen to use MyDonate as it is a not-for-profit fundraising service. The charities receive every penny of the money raised (excluding any credit or debit card charges).
670 Mile Hike - Scotland's South Tip to North Tip
So I'll be attempting this big long mad hike. I've planned a route which combines a bunch of trails running from the southern point at Mull of Galloway to the northern point at Dunnet Head by John O Groats. All together it's 670 miles and will take 5 to 7 weeks hiking 20 - 30 mile days winding through some of the UK's most isolated lands. It takes in these trails:
Mull of Galloway Trail
Loch Ryan Coastal Path
Ayrshire Coastal Path
West Highland Way
Cape Wrath Trail
North Highland Way
I'll be wild camping but once a week I'll have a rest day with a bed and shower to wash off my stank! I get my drinking water from streams which I filter or sterilise. At times I'll have to carry food to last me a few days. I have a satellite communicator which allows me to communicate when there's no mobile signal. It also allows my family and friends to track me. I'm navigating with map and compass and documenting the trip on a go pro style camera. I'm trying to be as lightweight as I can but the pack is still pretty heavy. I'm feeling a bit nervy about this one, but I think I'll be alright once I get going!
