About

Chris Garrett, James Lyons and Peter Stickland  are attempting to cycle the c.200 miles from London to Paris in 24 hours in order to raise money for the new St Mary's Centre. All costs associated with the challenge will be met by the three participants, so every penny donated will go to this very worthwhile project.

Event details

Cycling from London to Paris in 24 hours

We are raising money  to replace the existing rooms behind the New St Mary’s Church (on the edge of Clissold Park) with a new purpose built community centre (the St Mary’s Centre) that will serve as a safe, welcoming and accessible space to benefit everyone who lives or works in the area.

The current centre, although no longer fit for purpose, serves as a vital resource for the most marginalised in our society, including the those in food poverty, the elderly, the homeless and those seeking asylum who are bearing the brunt of the deep cuts to social welfare budgets. The groups currently supported by the centre include, amongst others, Hackney Winter Night Shelter, the Hackney Food Bank, the Hackney Migrant Centre and ‘Doctors of the World’.  However, because the building is no longer fit for purpose, the service that we can offer them is being compromised. There is therefore an urgency to build a new St Mary’s Centre that will enable such projects to flourish.

The estimated total cost to build the new St Mary’s Centre is £1.6m. We are raising all we can ourselves, but are still likely to be at least £250,000 short of the amount we need to start building.
