Pedalling up and over the Alps for Khora
We are living through a refugee crisis unseen since the Second World War. With the closure of European borders, many of those fleeing are now stranded in Greece.
This May, I'll be cycling up some big big hills to raise money for Khora, a grass-roots organisation that supports the refugee community in Athens to meet their basic needs, and provide a warm, welcoming respite.
I spent three weeks volunteering at Khora this February, and got to take part in the life and work of the building. Across the seven floors of the old print-works, kids are playing in the Kids Space, people are taking language or computer lessons, eating delicious meals cooked by volunteers in the kitchen below, receiving free dental care or legal advice, taking self-defence lessons or even relaxing with a bit of yoga or in the Women's Space.
Donations of any size are gratefully received and go straight to the charity - the costs of the trip are covered by the foolhardy cyclists themselves.
Thank you for your support!
Thighs of Steel 2017
We are fundraising for Help Refugees, who fund small grassroots refugee organisations. The specific group we are fundraising for is Khora, a co-operative made up of volunteers from all over the world, including the local Greek community, the refugee community and other international volunteers. Their community centre in Athens provides not only basic needs such as free nutritious food, warm clothing and access to dental care, but also social needs such as education, child care, access to information and a safe space to build relationships and relax.
