I’m climbing Kilimanjaro 3rd -14th October. It’s a challenge I am really looking forward to and have funded myself but it also seems like a great opportunity to help others far less fortunate.
Hinckley Area Foodbank is a charity I give my time to by helping out once a month collecting food from the warehouse ready to be given out to people in my own town who have hit rock bottom.
Hinckley Area Foodbank provides three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food and support to local people who are referred in crisis. Not being able to feed my family is a crisis I would not want to face!
Standing at 5,895 m (19,341 ft) Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain on the African continent, located in Kilimanjaro National Park in Tanzania. It is the highest free-standing mountain in the world; both Everest Base Camp’s – South and North – are below the summit of Kilimanjaro
I will be making my ascent on the much less-trekked Lemosho Route. We take the western approach across the caldera of Shira Volcano, traversing beneath the southern ice-fields of Kibo, Kilimanjaro's highest volcano.
Almost every kind of ecological system is found on the mountain: cultivated land, rain forest, heath, moorland, alpine desert and an arctic summit with most of the landscape covered with snow and ice.
Oxygen levels are reduced by 50% at the top so one of the biggest challenges is altitude sickness. roughly a third of attempts fail due to this.
It is undoubtedly the biggest personal challenge I have attempted so far but it should be an experience of a lifetime.
