About

Hi, I'm Ian. I'm a psychologist at the University of Bath, where I work on the safety of vulnerable road users and how people interact with their environments. Although I've done some running fairly successfully (UTMB; top-10 in the Arc of Attrition), I've never ridden in a bicycle race before. Well, except for a slow-cycling race when I was 7 years old. And that race was just 20 metres long and involved trying to go slower than all the other riders, so was not ideal preparation for what's coming.

Event details

The Transcontinental Race

The Transcontinental Race is a 4000 km non-stop self-supported bicycle race across Europe. On 28 July, we start in Geraardsbergen in Belgium and ride to Meteora in Greece. Apart from having to visit four mountain-top checkpoints in Germany, Italy, Slovakia and Romania, there's no set route and each of the 300 riders chooses their own way. The clock never stops, which means any time spent eating or doing repairs (or sleeping, if we're being really self-indulgent) has to be made up on the road. I'm hoping to ride at least 300km (190 miles) every day. It's going to be huge.

More details of the race, and information on how to follow it in real time via our satellite trackers, will appear in due course at http://transcontinental.cc. I'll be on Twitter through the race at twitter.com/ianwalker and all the race tweets will be tagged with #TCRNo5.

I'm raising money for two great road safety charities - Brake and Roadpeace - who work to prevent road deaths and support the families of those affected. Supporting these charities became all the more poignant after TCR race director Mike Hall was killed by a motorist during a race earlier this year.
