Hampshire Scout Expeditions (HSX) is a county Scout Group based in the New Forest and was established in 1987 to provide training for Scouts aged 14-18 across Hampshire through six-week expeditions focused physical and mental development as well as community-based projects in developing countries. The expeditions, usually based in developing countries, last from four to six weeks and involve a team of young people aged 14 years and upwards. There are at least 12 months training prior to each trip focusing on teamwork, personal development and leadership to ensure that members gain as much as possible from the experience. The hope is that as well as being a life changing experience for those involved, such contacts will bring greater understanding, and therefore tolerance, of the multi-cultural society in which we live today.

Since 1987 HSX they have sent expeditions to six continents and in 2007 put three Scout leaders on the top of Everest.

Event details

Skiing to the South Pole

The final continent untouched by HSX is the icy land of Antarctica. In 2018, Joe Doherty and Oliver Robinson will ski over 700 nautical miles (1,100 kilometres) from Hercules Inlet at 80° South, to the South Pole in 60 days. On the return journey, the team will kite-ski along the same route within 20 days.
The team will haul over 100kg of food, fuel and equipment with them in order to survive one of the most inhospitable environments on Earth. Enduring temperatures reaching -50°C and wind speeds of up to 80 miles per hour in 24 hour daylight; this is set to be one of the hardest challenges ever undertaken by any member on the team… and in the history of Scouting.

In order to attempt this incredible expedition the team need a range of specific kit to stay warm and kite back from the South Pole.
Some of the kit needed is listed below.
Socks - £60
Gloves - £180
Down Jacket - £300
Base Layers - £140
Kite - £500
Sunglasses - £60
Individual Total - £1240
Team Total - £2480

Any donations to help with this cost would be gratefully recieved.
