Well here we go again!
Naively when this project began, I expected the 'crisis' to be one that required an immediate crisis-relief-type response. I thought that soon conditions would get better and refugees could rebuild their lives in peace.
The disappointing truth is that the EU and the major NGOs have failed in their response. Many thousands of people are still stuck the bureaucracy filled asylum system, putting their lives on hold for years, often without access to education, work or safe housing.
Khora's community centre in Athens provides refugees with basic needs such as nutritious food, access to information and legal support, and clothing. It also provides human needs such as a space to build community, to learn and to co-create the space as volunteers themselves. Equally important to what Khora does, is how it does it; Khora prioritises dignity and respect in all the services offered. For all these reasons, I'm proud to be supporting Khora for another year.
London to Athens 2018
A group of not-so-serious cyclists have set themselves the serious challenge of cycling between London and Athens. The ride is a relay-style challenge, with each participant taking on a week or two of the overall trip.
We are fundraising for Khora; a grassroots, proactive association running a community centre in Athens. Their centre provides basic and human needs for people without freedom of movement. This includes free nutritious food, clothing, education, access to information and a safe space to build relationships and relax.
Equally important to what they offer, is how they offer it. Khora is run by volunteers from all over the world. Its team includes members of the local Greek community, the refugee community and other international volunteers too. It prioritises dignity and respect in every service it provides.
The £60,000 we are aiming to raise will pay for the rent for their community centre for an entire year. The running costs of a project are typically the hardest to find funding for, so it of particular importance to be able to provide this for Khora, to secure a stable future for the project. All fund-raised money goes to Khora, and none on the ride.
