About

Children living or working on the streets are often forced to grow up too quickly, without safe spaces to explore their potential - and just be kids. The Hansti Basti or "Happy Hoods" programmes aim to protect the "right to a childhood" for children in urban poverty, including those from refugee and migrant communities.

Why invest in happiness?
We might not think about it enough, but happiness matters. Happy memories build resilience, and the ability for young people to keep coping and hoping.

Similarly, play is an essential part of childhood and growing up. It is also known as "the child's work," it's so important for physical, mental and emotional development. Especially for mobile children facing the risks of neglect, abuse and exploitation on the streets, investing in happiness and wellbeing means investing in the future.

Why support CfC?
We are a small team driven entirely by passion, and care about children that few others serve. Instead of setting up from scratch, though, we help existing organisations who are doing good to do even better. We'll work hard to ensure what you give goes a long way.

Happy Hoods Programmes for Streetchildren

The “Hansti Basti” or “Happy Hoods” programmes aim to provide opportunities for learning through play, and protect the “right to a childhood” for street-connected children.

In each six-week programme, we will link creative volunteers with schools and shelters for children who live or work on the streets. Instead of one-off activities, we plan to maximise the impact we know volunteers can have, through structured programmes designed to support children's learning, build confidence and promote social skills.

The first programme has been created for the Pehli Kiran School System - a network of open air schools in the slums of Islamabad, Pakistan. These serve about 1800 children who often have to choose between work and school.

The interactive sessions will explore individual talents and potential, but long term aims also include raising student motivation to attend and stay in school. Highlights include a "Discovery Trip" to a museum, park or zoo.

This is only the first in a series of activities, with partners we have mapped across Pakistan. We are excited to start, and to learn, play and grow!
