We've decided to run for a charity which supports a little known condition, Von Hipple Lindau syndrome (VHL) which is a genetic disorder affecting a tumour suppression gene. A sufferer can have tumours to any of the following: the retina, kidneys, pancreas, brain etc.
In his early 20s my brother, Jon, passed out at the top of the stairs at home, tumbling to the bottom. He was finally diagnosed with VHL. Jon has had bouts of brain and kidney surgery and is now without kidneys.
Some time later, a blood test was established that identified our older sister, Gillian, as having VHL. I was fortunate enough to be clear. Sadly, Gill passed away in her 30s due to complications.
Since becoming aware of VHL, we made the link with my Mum's early death in her early 40s, which was simply put down to cancer at the time.Jon is still giving VHL the kicking it deserves, however, his son has also been found to have VHL.
Morrison's Great South Run
The Great South Run is a fast 10 mile road race that runs through Portsmouth and Southsea, taking in the Historic Dockyard and other landmarks.Chris talked me into running last year, but conveniently broke his leg in a bad football tackle, leaving me to run without company... poor me! Happily, I gained a personal best of 1 hour 18 minutes and 42 seconds.... yay me!So, rather than going for a personal best again, Chris and I are going to run in Monkey onesies. This will be the first time that either of us have run such an event in fancy dress, so wish us luck! Thanks so much for taking the time to look at our page. Hopefully you can spare a donation: If you can, please give Gift Aid! Go to http://www.vhl-uk-ireland.org/ for details on VHL.
