This year’s charity (ultra) challenge is to complete 100km along the UK’s South East Coast.Sounded pretty easy when I clicked the apply now button. 100km isn’t that far right? Wrong. It’s 62 miles; the equivalent of nearly 2 and a half marathons; twice the length of the Channel Tunnel; nearly 500 times around a football pitch….and I’ve never even attempted a 5km race. In fact the only thing I can ever recall running for is the Ice Cream van. Never one to back down from a challenge, training has begun and I’ve already learnt some key things: you can’t make compression socks look sexy; I now know what an iliotibial band is; don’t fight with running tape - it will always win; sadly it’s not a Pringles tube holder on the treadmill; and I’ve painfully discovered that the trouble with running is that by the time you realize you’re not in shape for it, it’s too far to walk back.

But my motivation is for the charity I’m doing this in aid of; Thyroid UK. A charity very personal to me, one which I know all too well the symptoms whilst training. Now I’m no Paula Radcliffe and with the advice that if you jog this, it’ll take roughly 15 hours to complete (in one go), nevertheless I will be giving it a bloody (probably literally) good go. And besides why do all this training to just get there and get it over with as fast as I can?So I apologise now for my donation requests and begging, as I know that there are lots of good causes all desperately needing funding at a time when we all may have less money to donate and give to charity in our own ways. So any donation, big or small, will be put to the best possible use for Thyroid UK to ‘promote effective diagnosis and appropriate treatment for people with diagnosed / undiagnosed thyroid disorders in the UK’ like me.Thank you :-)
