Gareth's Roger Bannister Mile
As the MP for Harrow West and a life long resident of Harrow, I am delighted to see Harrow's Half Marathon return after a 15 year hiatus.
WhiIe I had hoped to run the complete half marathon, I suffered a slight set back on my training with the birth of my son, coinciding with a surprise General Election. So, on September 17th, I will be running the Roger Bannister mile in support of 2 charities: Harrow Food Bank & Spirewatch.
The Harrow Foodbank recently marked its fourth year; while I wish this service wasn't required, the charity do an excellent job at providing three days’ nutritionally balanced emergency food & support to local people who are referred to them in crisis.
Charities such as Harrow Food Bank rely on donations and volunteers as their lifeblood. Govt figures reveal that this summer, over 3000 children in Harrow are at risk of going hungry, as they will not receive a free school meal outside of term time.
Spirewatch, known as the Friends of St Mary’s, have been around since 1945, with a prime objective ‘to help preserve and improve the fabric and precincts of St Mary’s, Harrow on the Hill, and to bring together in association, all who may wish to do so.’
Harrow Half Marathon
The new 'Harrow Half' event will take place this September, in partnership with Harrow Athletics Club, ActiveTrainingWorld, Harrow Council and a number of local businesses.
The ‘Harrow Half’ course features historic and well-known landmarks, stunning views, parks, countryside as well as the attractions you would expect of a modern, thriving borough and town centre. The race will start in the grounds of Harrow School, gently rising close to the top of Harrow on the Hill before dropping down to Harrow Town Centre.
You can enter the half marathon online at the event website: http://harrowhalfmarathon.co.uk/
