On 8th September, I will be walking 50k on the Thames Path Challenge! Although signing up with the best of intentions, I have done far too little training and have never walked anything like this distance before - ‘challenge’ will be the operative word for me! However, my challenge will be nothing in comparison with the challenges refugees face daily, as they flee their homes, leaving behind everything they know and undertaking unimaginably treacherous journeys to escape the horrors of their home countries. I would like to use my challenge as an opportunity to fundraise to help them.
Many of you will know that in May, I volunteered at Katsikas Refugee Camp. It was a humbling and transformative experience. However, my contribution felt like the tiniest drop in an ocean of need. I continue to support the tremendous work that Refugee Support are doing in the camps of Greece and I would love to raise more for this tiny charity. Refugee Support have minimal overheads and are working on a shoestring budget. I have seen first-hand the fantastic work they do - always with integrity, optimism and enthusiasm. To find out more about my time at the camp, please read my public Facebook posts.
Raising funds for Refugee Support
I want to raise awareness and funds for refugees trapped in Greece. In 2015, Europe started to close its borders to refugees who had no choice but to leave their homes in search of safety and security. In March 2016, the EU signed a deal with Turkey to slow the arrival of refugees into Greece and agreed to settle those that had already arrived in EU territory. Refugee Support Europe was set up in Greece in April 2016 to help support the refugees on new camps that were set up for those trapped in Greece. Although there has been a slow improvement in living conditions on the mainland, conditions are still dreadful, people are waiting far too long for their applications to be processed, the southern border countries are shouldering the burden and still the refugees come We need to show compassion and solidarity in this neglected humanitarian crisis., As a continent we have failed the refugees both morally and politically. I hope I can raise awareness and essential funds for this vital work in Greece. Please join me by supporting in whichever way you can. Thank you.
