If you have volunteered at Uganda Lodge you will of met me and maybe we have been on safari together? If not, please do consider a 'Holiday with a Difference' at some time in the future. You will see that together with support from around the world, we are enabling hundreds of the poorest of children in Ruhanga to receive a good Primary Education. However many youngsters who leave our school will not afford further Education and even for those who can, they find there are almost no opportunities for paid employment in rural Uganda.
One answer to this is to offer these young people a variety of affordable vocational training courses teamed up with some basic business skills.
This will enable them to become self employed and start up a small business alongside their farming activities which will help them to support themselves and their future families.
These skills will help prevent early pregnancy and marriage amongst the young girls - usually to much older men - and it will encourage the boys not to drift into the towns looking for non-existent jobs.
This is why I hope you will sponsor me to run in the Uganda Marathon Race

Event details

Over the past 10 years I have met many overseas volunteers, and through our Ugandan NGO called 'Stand on Your Own' your efforts have enabled us to build a Volunteer Guest House, a Nursery & Primary School, a Village Medical Centre, a Gravity-fed Clean Water System and now we have started affordable Vocational Training Workshops.
The latter are badly needed in these rural areas and currently we can only offer Hairdressing, Shoemaking,Tailoring and Knitting.
We have a partly completed building where we plan to open a restaurant and thus be able to offer a wide range of new hospitality and catering skills to many more youngsters.
As we are situated on the main trans-Africa Highway many tourists  will stop as they pass our gates each day on their way to  gorilla trekking and safaris in the National Parks as well as travellers going to Rwanda or Kenya.
This means that we will receive an income and thus enable student fees to be kept to an easily affordable minimum.
This is a big, exciting project but it still needs at least £10,000 to complete. Every pound that you can donate to our UK partner charity will directly help to buy more building materials and continue the work.
