Bucks Buoys & Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge
Bucks Buoys is a team of 4 friends: Kevin Luff, 49, Director of local company H2O plumbing and heating; Paul (Frankie) Smith, 59, Director of local company Kinv Flooring; Trevor Cooper, 64, Builder/Glazer and Nic Parslow, 55, Underwriter. The Team came together when Kev, Paul and Trevor were in Antigua in January 2018 for Kev's wedding to long term girlfriend Sara, and they saw a 2017 entrant unloading their boat. They were inspired! Nic was recruited soon after their return to the UK. None of the Buoys had ever rowed before! But they bought the very boat they saw unloading in Antigua, paid their entry fee, and there was no turning back! The Team have really stepped up to the Challenge so far, swapping sessions in the pub for dedicated training sessions with sponsors David Lloyd Clubs and Iyengar Yoga Shala High Wycombe, as well as learning to row with Marlow Rowing Club, and they are thoroughly enjoying it. As well as losing 4 stone between them, they are already fitter and stronger than ever. Nic lost his wife and his brother to cancer in 2016, and Kev's wife Sara was diagnosed with breast cancer in the same year. The Buoys are determined to live life to the max: carpe diem!
The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge
For the 4 friends, this experience promises to be the challenge of a lifetime, testing them physically, mentally and emotionally. They are determined to succeed through extreme weather and punishing conditions. With no rowing experience, and being a more ‘senior’ team than many other entrants, the Buoys are aiming to complete the challenge in under 38 days, to beat the current pure boat record.
They also aim to be the oldest 4 to complete the challenge, with a combined age of 233 at the race start – and 234 by the end of the race, all they have to do is complete the Challenge to break this World record. Finally and crucially, the Buoys hope to raise lots of money in sponsorship and donations so that their chosen charities receive maximum benefit from the campaign. The Buoys have all had personal experience of the devastation that cancer can bring, so chose MacMillan Cancer Support as one of their charities. The other is IN-vision, researching and raising awareness of infantile nystagmus, a lifelong condition affecting eye movement. Paralympian Gold Medallist and World Champion Naomi Riches MBE is patron of IN-vision and is supporting the Bucks Buoys' Campaign.
