Trainers to Troon
Every year, Glasgow taxi drivers give up a day for free to take 300 children with additional support needs on a day out to Troon. It is a truly spectacular sight, with all the taxis decorated in bright colours, balloons and themed in all sorts of ways. The scene as they leave Kelvin Way is something else with only smiles to be seen on children's faces (and the adults, with often a few tears too). This year will be the 74th occasion of the trip and I've been lucky to be involved on the day for most of the past nine. It is truly a highlight of the year and reminder of what's really important. As a thank you to all the volunteers, including the driving force that is the Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund which organises the trip, this year I will also travel to Troon - but by foot! Just before the taxis set off, I will too, running a half marathon, then cycling 20 miles then running eight more, all the way from Glasgow to Troon. I hope to raise money doing so - and will split 50/50 between two causes, the Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund and Glasgow Children's Hospital Charity - I myself spent some time in the hospital as a toddler so know only too well of its amazing work. Thanks.
