The plight of refugees around the world is present on the news every day. Our children are exposed to what is going on, with many families choosing to talk openly to the children about current politics and world wide issues. The ending to most of our conversations with the children is often 'How can we help?' So...
The long walk and the big sleep out!
On Friday 31st March we are setting off on a journey. One of the main focuses for children as they are learning about refugees and the troubles they face, is often the long journey they have to take; holding everything they own, feeling tired, cold and often with unsuitable clothing, food and water. To try to show, even in the smallest way, how this might feel, we are embarking on a long walk of our own.
Families are invited to meet us at school on Friday 31st March at 5pm. You can choose to carry as much as you want - this may be nothing at all or perhaps it's some toys in a back-pack, some food and water or a bag of clothes. We are hoping to be visible to our local community and raise awareness for Help Refugees, whilst all the time learning as much as we can about what life is like in other parts of the world for people just like us.
On our return to school, staff will be spending the night on the school field. We will be taking lots of photos of the event preparing for lots of discussion about how it felt, how safe we were and considering how we managed to organise suitable clothing, shelter and the impact of the weather.
